About

Ink, water and a lot of looking.

The short version

I trained as a botanical illustrator at the garden in Prague, pressing and drawing plants for two years before anyone paid me to do it. The birds, fish and insects came later, mostly through the Vltava field guide, which took three winters and taught me to draw quickly from museum drawers.

Every plate begins in pencil, from life or from a specimen, is inked with a fine nib and gets its colour last, in thin washes that keep the line visible. I work on cotton paper and scan the finished sheet, so the artwork you receive is the artwork.

I take four or five larger commissions a year and a handful of editorial pieces between them.
